On the past months and the future
« on: July 20, 2010, 11:16:40 PM »

Welcome back!

An explaination is deserved: The hallofworlds.net domain wasn't ours, it was registered by Iluvatar, one of the original founders together with Aldiran, and it's registration ran out. I tried to get it once it ran out, but first it was hijacked by a domain-company and now by a cybersquatter.
Before the latter got the domain I was checking daily when a bureaucratic status dropped, but cybersuatters have dedicated tools to check which domains already show up in google and are about to be dropped from the registry. Hence for teh time being we're reachable at this domain hallofworlds.info

I'm thinking of starting all over again at worldsoffantasy.net, a domain which is still registered for some years, and start from the ground up as a site & community for fantastic genre fiction in general (sci-fi, horror & fantasy). We have a very small core-group of visitors who've pretty much discussed everything on the works of R.E.Feist.  Besides, most authors have official sites with their own communities, communities who are also struggling with staying alive.

Hey, great to have the old place up and running again. I'm currently rolling around with the idea of what to do with the posts from the two temp. forums. All experimental, at this stage, like the Bakker: lthoughts we had and were discussing. I'm not sure how readable that is, but I'm talking with Syr about it.

Some of the posts obviously aren't really needed to be carried over, most likely, anyway. Anyone who personally feels the need, go ahead.

Personally speaking, I'd like to see Al's completed and Kiks impending list make an appearance.

Good to be back!

Hopefully we can put an end to all this forum jumping soon!

I'll move the completed part of my list over and get on with it at some stage today. Have to do it inbetween work.

Glad to see it back...

I think the best idea is to go with Worlds of Fantasy. I've been a member of the HoW for well over 8 years, and it's been years since i made a meaningfull contribution to any discussion regarding Feist. It been years since i read any of Feist, and despite being a huge fan in my early years where i couldn't get enough of his books, right now i'm not that big a Feist fan anymore. In fact, there are plenty of writers i enjoy reading more. I don't think this site needs to be Feist oriented anymore.

Any ideas what we'd do with the old material if (when) we decide to move onto a brand new spanking site?

This is an interesting notion and one I support.  I'll probably always revisit the Riftwar and Empire books, King's Buccaneer and Prince of the Blood, but have had little interest in the rest.  I've read quite a few but there was nothing in there that made me want to return like the aforementioned do.

So, instead of lingering here, and with Syrion never within sight, do you reckon we should pack our bags and leave? Move elsewhere? This forum's days are surely done. I've moved onto other forums, but I'd still like to kick it with the members from these waters.

True. Been here for about a decade now. The thought of internet forums doesnt really appeal to me anymore. The HoW does though. If it happends i am sinking with the ship

I'm the same. This is the only forum I'm active on in a general chat/social way, and I have connections on Facebook with only a few members here. I'm going to get wet too.

This is one of six message boards that I belong to and am active on. Just because I post elsewhere, doesn't mean I don't have the time or inclination to post here. No, the forum is not as active as it once was and I haven't seen an admin in months, but neither mean the ship is sinking. Hell, if anything we've been beached on a desert island for a couple years now--we're isolated because no one can find us on search engines, have a small community, and are free from marauding spam... who needs an admin in such a case? The downside is, of course, that our membership isn't growing and will not grow.

The ship's not sinking, but it is not going anywhere either (well, until the domain name expires again, but then we'll just flit about like a ghost ship like the last time). Personally, I like this community because it is the antithesis of those larger ones I'm active on. I don't have to worry about hundreds of faceless assholes posting bullshit and nonsense or getting p**sy because they disagree with what I've said... I just have to deal with a handful instead. ;)

The thing is, I haven't liked Simple Machines (our software) since the day it's been installed. I stated as much in the chatroom, if anyone recalls, and I've certainly not aproved of it on the forums. It looks like crap. I had better looking forums a decade ago when I was tinkering around with the likes of InvisionFree, which is still a better apparatus than this cheap rubbish. We've been swindled. Or rather, the likes of Class and Kiks have. Hell, we even lost our domain name.

I do love how small our community is, I certainly don't find the likes of Westeros appealing in all it's mega-glory. Comments lost in a swathe of skull-f**kery. Along with that place, I'm a member of another couple of communities, but it's just not the same. And it's saddening seeing this place receive so little attention or notice.

If a move wouldn't persuade you all round to becoming more involved, what would encourage you?

For me... absolutely nothing.

Though I belong to six communities, I am not as active on message boards as I used to be. Lack of interest plays a huge role. I have no desire to wade through the mounds of personal and political bullshit that can be found on larger forums, hence why I bookmark those sites so that I go directly to the Literature sections. Even then, my changing reading tastes and the amount of times I have seen the same threads leads me to lurk, only occasionally posting.

There is not much you can do these days because most smaller forums are going the way of the dodo and the larger forums are thriving, growing larger and more and more f**king hideous to venture into the thick of. That and social networking has become the go-to foundations for communities these days.

Al, Nick and Jimbob will notice that I have dragged them into some nerdery via FB. Just a group dedicated to geek time, much like the stuff we spout on about on here. Feel free to remove yourself if the group annoys you fellas. Hahaha. Thought we may as well use it to try and attract some memberoos. I think at least one of my mates on there is already a member, though I think he only posted once.

This was the first forum I was active on, it's a shame it's gone down so much, but hey there's only so much discussion one author can generate. Now (I think it's been about 3 years now)I am mostly on a military forum, it's the only other place I have been active as a member. There are almost no rules there and a lot interesting topics come up with members from all over the world, not like here where its just people from the Western nations(not that there's anything wrong with that). But yeah if you want to test your wits on a wide range of topics WAFF(worlds armed forces forum) is a good place.

Even though I haven't been a regular for ages, I am definitely not in favour of breaking the place up.
