Hot Drinks - Life's Little Kicks to the Stomach
« on: August 24, 2009, 05:17:34 PM »

Now, anyone who chats to me on a regular basis, will know of my fondness for hot drinks. In particular, tea. However, over the last week I've been experiencing the Second Coming of Coffee.

As a result of this, I believe I've perfected my ability to make a damn good cup of dirt. I am, in short, now a Master. :jester: Now, if some people have special ways of making coffee (whiskey, whiskey) fantastic, I'd love to hear it.

Also, I'd really like to hear what other hot, tasty drinks you people are concocting of late. I'm especially curious about green tea. I went through a similar phase with green tea, as I'm now going through with coffee, but it did not end well. I now have too much green tea in the house, and am not enthused at all to drink any of it. Where did I go wrong? :elf_dead: But I would love to experience another lovely cup of green tea, so with a little help, we'll see.

I've given up teh coffee (among other things) in an attempt to get healthy, but I do enjoy a good cup of java.

My fav' way to make a cup o' "Joe" (hahaha, no wonder you like the stuff Goey) is to microwave a mug of icecream for 30 secs and add some nescafe and a couple of sugars. Incredible and very easy to make.

And I totally didn't steal that idea from you Kiks, but on the same day you posted, I suggested that to Joe. :P Mine!

I'm the daughter and sister of two coffee snobs, but the daughter and sister of two non-coffee snobs -- that's a bit confusing, isn't it? My mum is a snob, my sister a barista, and my little sis and dad don't give a damn as long as it has caffiene. Personally, I like good coffee, but I'm not gonna hold you up to it. And I like good tea more.

My favourite, though, is mocha lattes, if I have the $$$ to splurge a bit (they run about $3-4 usually). At home, I put on a cup of drip coffee, fill it about 2/3 of the way, and then add a spoon scoop of sugar (about 12g or so) and a good squirt of chocolate syrup, stir it up, and fill the rest with milk (either 2% or whole).
Yum.

and of course tea -- I prefer Irish Breakfast style, sometimes British Breakfast. And there's a teahouse in town with a very extensive menu, I love their Cherry Sencha and 'Rainforest Green' (which is green tea flavoured with rhubarb and strawberry).... and chai, of course, I love bakti chai (which is quite spicy, with ginger and cardamom).....

:)

If I'm drinking tea its really only green tea. I really like Tazo green tea (because its got a hint of something or other in it) but I'm not picky about the type or brand of green tea really.

I also really enjoy good strong coffee, the best of which I have had in places like Holland and France when I travel. At home I buy Dunkin coffee (which is surprisingly good actually) or Starbucks coffee, which I'm not convinced is any better than others, I just don't want to drop the money it would take to keep trying other brands and risk getting stuck with crappy coffee. As far as prep, the best strong coffee I know how to make at home is just using a french press. But lets face it, french presses are A) a pain in the butt (because I'm lazy... particularly before my morning coffee) and B) they use up a ton of coffee grounds if done right. So usually I just make it in a coffee maker and put 1.5x what they say to use.

I usually only drink coffee in the morning, but if I'm feeling particularly crazy I really do like a good Irish Coffee. The problem is I usually want like 3-4 of them, but then I'm downing 3-4 cups of coffee... at night... which is not really what I wanted... which leaves me wondering why I didn't just order shots of irish whiskey... which is not really what I wanted either... Its a dilemma.

Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Tea (Green or otherwise) all good.  That concoction sounds delectable, Kikori.

My older sister has an oversize french press she uses to make pitchers of coffee to refridgerate and use for iced coffee... quite lovely. hmmm... she used to aspire to being an indie barista, not sure where that went. oh, to art school. Yea, that option's still open.

I've gotten back into the green teas, over the last week! I've got some nice blackcurrant and apple ones, which has been my weapon of choice. Might whip some out now, actually.

Had some bhakti chai with honey and steamed milk today -- we're heading towards winter here, time to bring out the hot drinks.... :)

Been getting back on the peppermint tea! Nothing better than a tomato salsa scroll and some pep tea in the morn'.

Peppermint tea's great for when you've drank some bad beer the night before, I find, and you've got a real bad stomach. Works a treat. :)

Bought a box of Yogi Tea Black Chai. Oh, lovely.
One thing I've found is that different blends of chai matter a lot. It's generally Assam or Darjeeling black tea, with cardamom, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and sometimes nutmeg and/or black licorice. You brew it, add honey (I like it really sweet) and milk (preferably whole/full-fat milk, supposed to be heavy and warming).

Personally, I far prefer an emphasis on the ginger and cardamom, less so cloves and cinnamon (but still there), perhaps nutmeg, but definitely no licorice nor fennel nor anise). I love bhakti blend, Yogi Tea's blend, and Zhena's Gypsy Tea Fireside Chai, which has rooibos instead of black tea.

Celestial Seasonings? Not so much. Love their herbal fruit teas, but their chai? crap.
Oh, and mate chai can be pretty good too. :)

My older sister used to be a barista and baker for a coffee shop called Prufrock's here (kudos to any name-recognizers), but she eventually quit because she drank too much of her own coffee and got super stressed (not to mention losing way too much weight 'cause of too much buzz to sit and eat... >.< silly girl).

Random trivia: tea 'strings' contribute 3.5 million pounds of waste to landfills every year! The local tea company we buy from, Celestial Seasonings, not only make some damn fine teas, but also try to be Eco-friendly. They'll have little bits of info like that on their boxes.

Today, I'm drinking this one.

Yummy!

I do have to point out that Celestial Seasonings is owned by Hain, a major food corporation. Didn't used to be, but they were bought up in 2003-or-so.

And the apple spice tea is awesome. It feels damn weird to be responding to Joe's post here... while he's not far away, but just out working. Weird. Weeiiiird.
Gonna go get some tea, thanks for the idea, love!

Something on our news today about coffee shop caffine. Apparently "healthy daily amount" is 200mg, about 4 cups of normal instant coffee, so about 50mg a cup.

Some single coffee house espresso shots alone can contain 6 times the caffine than that 1 standard cup.

Starbucks is near enough spot on at 50-51mg a shot. Costa coffee tends to come next at 150mg per shot, but an indipendant coffee house with much stonger coffee can be as much as 300-350mg per SHOT.

Oooops.  :P
