Beowulf Goes To Movies
Warner Brothers is developing a film based on the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Newcomer Matthew Sand will write the script for the film version of the story, about a knight who takes up the sword against a monster.
The eighth-century tale centers on Beowulf of the Geats, who is called to slay Grendel, a monster that is attacking a Danish kingdom. The poem is known to have been an influence on J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings, the trade paper reported.

I'll admit it's been a long time since I read Beowulf but I'm sure Hollywood will change the story for maxium money potental. Any word on who will direct?

It's very co-incidental that I was studying this in english earlier on in the year for Advanced English, was for poetry topic. First thing we looked at, it was kinda daunting actually reading it in the ol english language that we all couldnt read  But the story in itself would make a decent movie these days, but as sabre said Holywood will shuzh it up alot. |

I used to like Beowulf, but as i have have to do 5 reports on it in the past 4 years. I now hate it and have no intention of either seeing the movie, or reading it again.

There's already a movie about beowulf existing, starring Chrisopher Lambert, if I'm right. That one was quite okay. But let's wait and see what they make of it this time.

Summary: This sucks
Why did I do this? Why, when I saw this film on the video rental wall, did I hope that it would be another 13th Warrior? All I did was set myself up for disappointment. This movie is terrible. Don't rent it, don't watch it, ignore it. When was this thing released, anyway? I see it says 1999, but it was never released in the US. I don't even know when the video release was. Should have kept this one overseas...

I read parts of Beowulf fo English class this year, but never the whole thing. I should before the movie comes out.
Oh yea, the Chris Lambert sci-fi version sucks. Do not watch it...

I only heard of beowulf was the influence for tolkien. but NO more. Well I should ask Syrion to lend that book???

[span style=\'color:blue\']I studied Beowulf in "olde englishe" at University College London, and loved it !
My love increased when I read Tolkien, as the gentleman of Arda says himself in his letters he has used the character of the hero.
Altogether, Beowulf takes also from the ancient Kalevala and Edda, so we're in a long story of legends which never die.
I saw the Christopher Lambert's and liked it, so as soon as it reaches France, I certainly'll go and see it.
