Title: Nintendo Wii

OMFG. Nintendo have done it again.

  Wii = WTF.

          [!--quoteo--][div class=\'quotetop\']QUOTE[/div][div class=\'quotemain\'][!--quotec--]INTRODUCING ... Wii.

  As in "we."

While the code-name "Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii  represents the answer.

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from  everybody else.
Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But  you're probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes this console is for  everyone.

Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the  unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the  world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.
Because, it's really not about you or me.
  It's about Wii.

And together, Wii will change everything.

      [/quote]

All I can say is WTF. What was wrong with the name 'Revolution', and what's so damn good about 'Wii'.

BTW, Wii sounds like 'Wee' too, which means 'p**s' which is something you might do while reading this...

Like I said in chat, I fail to see the big deal. The name won't affect the playability of the console, so what does it matter what it's called?

I actually read this on CAD comics news post, I fail to see any point, it dosent really matter what its called. As long as its not calling something confusing like the Atari or something.

Completely idiotic move by Nintendo. I don't know what the marketing director is smoking. Why would you rename a console to "Wii", more than a year after everyone started calling it "Revolution"? Just causes pointless confusion and irritation.

"Revolution" brings across the feeling of the new console clearly enough. Clearly Nintendo have tried to go for a unique and eyecatching name. Unfortunately, history has shown us that consoles with more ordinary, straightforward names sell better.

"Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii."

Yeah right. One of their primary markets, Japan, won't be able to pronounce the name because the sound "wi" doesn't exist in Japanese (they'l be calling it "Rii", which doesn't sound anything like "we", so sorry about that Nintendo, but the poor Japanese won't be able to fully grasp the wonderful feeling of togetherness that comes from your new name. )

And oh my, the ii looks like the controllers...and *gasp* people! Who is going to read that far into it? Why did they feel a need to sacrifice a name that everyone already knows really well for a name featuring imagery that nobody is going to see?

Wii sounds really silly. People are either going to call it "Wee" or "Wi-i".

Revolution sounds so much cooler, besides nintendo aims for younger gamers in general. Probably cooler to have a Revolution console in your house than a Wee console. Besides if you notice that a name you thought up lies well in the market, why the hell would you try to change it? :S Only costs more money and the name ain't even better to what it's called now.

I agree its a totally stupid name, Revolution is much better and sounds more high-tech. Hopefully this will not put people off buying the console as it does look good. I hope the Nintendo marketing people are looking online and seeing all the negative feedback to the name, then they might consider changing it.

I say nintendo fans should take it with a grain of salt. I mean, when they announced their first next-gen console, they called it the Nintendo Dolphin. They changed it to GameCube, which is a lot less silly. Now they've pulled a 180, probably just to get a few laughs out of their fans reactions to it. Personally, I'm gonna enjoy going to the store and asking for one "Nintendo WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!".

OK I have alot to say on this topic, being a long time member of the Nintendo Cult... thats what it is, come on if the order was given at a high enough level the majority of Nintendo gamers would take up arms and systematically destroy everything PS, our veiws on the Xbox are currently neutral as it has yet to try and steal titles and we fully endorse them as a gaming alternative.

First although the name has been mocked widely it should be taken into account that Nintendo is not just catering to kids and big-kids. Since the get go they have been aiming for an experience that the entire family can enjoy, hence the name of their original console the Famicom (family computer), also please remember this was in the early 1980's.

Yes I have had great laughs at the various reasons for the name choice, but overall I think it shows something about Nintendo, that they really REALLY believe in this console. You say that no one would read into it enough to understand the name choice aswell as the two 'ii', well then you have yet to meet a proper Jap gamer, those read far too deeply into everything... kinda why they are the elite and why the dislike the Xbox (they believed that much like Lara Croft games and FFX-2 it was an attempt at fanboy appeal... the two X's).

As for my earlier statement regarding the PS situation although it is disliked it is much like the Xbox tolerated, as it has produced some worthwhile titles, and once again the Xbox will never be as popular as either of the two in the Asian market as FPS games are not the most liked, kind of like RPG's in the rest of the world.

But the above two views are Jap my veiws are simplier. Nintendo started it and its up to them when and more importantly IF it will ever stop.

And anyway nothing has ever come close to topping Metroid, Zelda, Pokemon, FF games up to 7, Secret of Mana, Excite Bike...

Thats me ranted now feel free to tear away at it.

Who cares about the name?  Seriously...did you see Red Steel?  You get to wield a flipping sword and be like a swordsman and it'll be crazy!  I am now officially starting a clan on this Forum for the lovers of the name Wii.  Wii shall be called..."The Knights Who Say Wii!" Give into the Revolution and embrace Wii!

LOL Uprightman  I am sure wii all agree with you

I have seen some of the vids from E3 and they look impressive. The console will be about half the $499/599 for the PS3.

Hmmm.... I will join your "Knights Who Say Wii"  I agree completly with Paxen.. if Nintendo ordered it I would take arms and conqueror the world..  No name, no matter how stupid, will stop me from getting the next Nintendo console. I always have been and always will be a Nintendo fan(boy)

Xacithus just add a lil' something in your signature to represent the "Knights of Wii."  I have a few simple words for Nintendo doubters.  Super...Smash...Bros...Brawl.  Featuring the one and only Pit (from Kid Icarus), Metaknight (from Kirby's Dreamland), Wario, Zero Suit Samus, and Solid Snake (from MGS series).  Now if that doesn't convince you to get a Wii...then idk what will.  Oh and for those of you who hate the name...some online company is manufactoring decals that say "Revolution."  I'll try and hit the forums up with a link when I find it.

Cool. I wonder is that a sign we might get a MGS on it too? *drools* that would be fun with the controller.

Wii all should have our fingers crossed that Nintendo knows what it's doing.

Plus, how great are the other names?

Quote:
Ignorance. That's the exact thing everyone said about the N64 controller, the GC controller, the GC game size, the GC ITSELF, the Wii controller. And now no one cares about that stuff anymore. Get over it. Baby.

It's WAY more creative than Sony.

"New system, what should we call this one?"

"Playstation"

"Alright, new system, what should we call this one?"

"Get ready for this brainstorming moment...Playstation...TWO!!!"

"Alright, new system again, what will be the name of this one?"

"Alright, I'm going to take a nostalgic moment and bring some old creative flare back into this one...how's this...Playstation.....

...

THREE!!!!"

genious guys. >_>

in that case, poper's so ugly they embossed his face on a box of super-strength laxatives and sold it empty

last  nintendo i had was the 64 and I still play mario kart every now and then, but for me nintendo reached its peak with mario kart 64 so I have stuck to playstation and will probably get a ps3 if i get any of the consoles.

The best game on 64 was Goldeneye, there is however only one good game on gamecube and that is Smash Bros., its also the only reason I would get a Wii. Sony sucks, buy an Xbox.

I agree GOldeneye was the best game on the N64, the new smash bros looks very cool as does Mario Galaxy. I will be buying a Wii, I just wish it was HD as I have an HD TV so it would be a shame not to make use of this.

Did you know that it's completely backwards compatible with the Gamecube and can take both kinds of discs, Wii and GC, and it comes with emulators for all previous nintendo consoles, you probably did, but that is so cool.

i've never been a huge fanboy of Nintendo's not that i hated them or anything i just never really played them. i got an N64 for when i was a kid but i didnt like most of the games. ive never even played Zelda which apparently is a mortal sin in the fanboy world. i might get one just because they're so cheap and the controller looks interesting but im not sure yet. and about the name of course they changed it. with xbox360 and ps3 out or coming out they had to do something that would set them apart, way apart, you'll never forget that name will you? i really dont care what it is, either way so. meh.

I am really considering getting the Wii, I really want to play old school snes games and my N64 favorites. I think Wii actually stands to take a bit of the market this time around. Perhaps if Sony screws up (which I believe will and already is) it might come out ahead or in second place (the 360 is still alot cheaper than the PS3 and I am personally expecting a price reduction around the launch date of the PS3 (which is a very good idea btw), I think there will be better sales this time around for both Nintendo and Microsoft.

For those of you who are big Star Wars fans.  You'll be happy to hear that Lucas Arts is planning and possibly is already under production for a Wii Star Wars title.  In which, yes, you will be able to wield a lightsaber and hear the fabled swoooosh through the speaker on the Wii-mote.

For Smash Bros. Fans you'll be disheartened to hear that Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch and Young Link have recieved the boot and are to be replaced by Ridley (Samus's arch-nemesis), Bowser Jr., and "Celda" Link (better known as Windwaker Link) who will recieve the same title as Young Link but with Spiffy new looks and moves.

For other doubters Ubisoft, the French software company, has dedicated all of its best franchises to the system including Farcry, the new Red Steel, Rayman, et. al.  Still doubting Wii?  Does a mere 200$ US tantalize you (Euro price varies depending on your currency Euro or Pound).  So remember when it's either 700$ and your soul or $200 and a great variety of games...pick Nintendo and leave your soul for Feist

I didn't mention Snake b/c he has already been announced.  The description I gave is of a new roster change that Sakurai has made to the pre-existing cast.  But just in case others don't know.  The new characters thus far are: Pit, Metaknight, Zero-Suit Samus, Wario, Solid Snake, Bowser Jr., Ridley, Windwaker Link.

I think the consoles just going to do fine. Wherever or not Nintendo turns a corner with it, I can't predict, but they'll defineltly make a lot of money off it. No surprises there really, but they've really got something going with that new joypad-thingey. It's not ideal but it'll pull the idiots in. I read something a couple of weeks back that said Nintendo was focussing on bringing in non-gamers, but at what cost?

I like the idea of using the controller as a lightsaber though.  Just one of the things i've heard thrown about.

As the end of August quickly approaches I was wondering if anyone had gotten tickets to the Leipzig Gaming Convention because on August 23rd Nintendo is holding a press conference called "Wii prove our Promise" in which they should be revealing upto 7 new Wii launch titles including a much rumored about Wii-version of the sleeper hit Mario Super Strikers (note: this was the USA launch name for the GC).  Nintendo's Big 3rd Party supporter Ubisoft is boasting playable versions of Red Steel along with Rayman.  All in all us gamers should be excited about Nintendo's innovation and surprisingly large 3rd party support.

I haven't heard any news about this but as it is the 2nd to last big gaming Expo of the year (the other being Tokyo Gaming Show aka TGS) we are bound to hear new Smash Bros. news by the end of September or else Nintendo will have to unveil it at a smaller less cool E3.  Keep your fingers crossed

This system gets better and better with every turn.

First off...Syrion I'm appalled at your idea of a kill move for Kirby...hahaha.  My friend does that all the time and I yell and curse at him.

And the most important tid bit of all.  Leipzig Gaming Convention is underway (another reason why I'm envious of the Germans).  The biggest bits of news have come through in the form of sequels.  Mario Super Strikers (in Europe it was Super Mario Football I believe) has been announced and was shown with a playable demo  Mario Strikers Demo (http://media.wii.ign.com/media/846/846913/vids_1.html).  Most notably is the sweet changes in the Superstrike which you can now block.  Also, it will feature a captain and team select just as Mario Baseball had featured.  What proves to make this sequel even better is Next Level Games will make use of the Wi-Fi capabilities and bring Mario Strikers online so you can battle players around the world.  Sounds like a HoW tourney will be in order.

Also, Battalion Wars will make a come back on the Wii featuring 3 varieties of Multiplayer modes as well as all the fun the original had to offer.

As the conference continues expect more from Ninty because they will not stop shocking me.

Only Nintendo could totally screw up a prelaunch lead in the next-gen wars by making the Wii ($250) $50 less than the Xbox 360 ($299.99).  Even worse they launch the system with the worst possible game!  They're including Wii Sports in the packaging probably because no one else would buy that game it's completely worthless.  If they want to amp up sales keep the price at $250 and include a worthwhile game...hell I would rather it come with Rayman than Wii Sports.  This launch is not looking as good as it possibly once was with a release price well below their competitors.

In addition, 1st party Wii games are still going to be $49.99 when the President Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto both said the games would be cost efficient for the consumer.  I could pay $10 more to get a more mature and hardcore game on a system that costs only $50 more...not too smart Nintendo.  If I were Microsoft I would launch Halo 3 on the day Wii launches and make everyone forget that Nintendo even had a system.

*sighs*...where can I wait in line to buy a Wii.......

It all sounds good to me. 19th November release it great and I don't really care what game it comes with, as far  as I know it'll still end up cheaper for me then any previous console I've bought.
And if the games are only $50 then as long as the price is the same over here (i.e. direct conversion to euros) the games will be much cheaper (thats about half the price of current games)

Awhh... 8th december here! That sucks...
Ah well, its only a few months... *puts on his waiting hat*

Also: Australia gets it the 7th, so I assume thats the same day  Which is pretty good as far as I know, since usually they get these kinda things months after everyone else (or so I understand)

Only a few months to wait, not to bad. I thought the price might be a bit lower as £179 is almost $300 USD which is hardly fair.

Can anyone tell me why Europe and Asia get a whole load of stuff with their wii boxes while North America only gets the wii-mote, the system, and game.  It doesn't make a lick of sense to include all those goodies for everyone but the North Americans.

Japen does not get the Wii Sports game while US and Europe does. If there is anything extra between the US and Europe console it should have something to do with the price being more.

Not long to the release now.

Did anyone see the latest South park episode where Cartman is waiting for a Nintendo Wii to come out, it is 3 weeks till the console comes out and he is impatient so he freezes himself but wakes up in the 26th Century (they use a cheesy "Buck Rogers" intro for this bit of the episode)

ive bought this today for my kids (for christmas) but i just had to check that it worked properly.
i had a quick go on twilight princess and wii sports, the boxing was fun, and i sucked at bowling, just like real life.Zelda looks great in my opinion, and is easy to control, i played up to the part where you get epona.
Setting up the console was also easy, the only thing different was setting up the sensor on the tv.
Anyway ive wrapped it up now, so im not tempted. One other thing, you need a wireless router to play online, you can buy a nintendo wifi one for 30 quid  in store.

Got a wii at home. Bought it on thursday. Really nice work from Nintendo i must admit. The aiming is a little bit off but i'll try to recalibrate it. Also bought Red Steel. Really nice game. Graphics aren't that great compared to the standard 360 games but the handling is of the gun makes it worth it. Takes a while to get the hang of it but once u get it it's like a walk in the park. I'm off to play some more Red Steel.

I am pleased some of our members have managed to get their hands on the Wii, it has sold out in the UK with a lot of people annoyed as they had pre-ordered but did still not get one.

Ok, after more playing I can safely say this is the best thing that has ever happened to gaming... Wii Sports is f***ing brilliant. I've never had so much fun playing sports, and its easy to see how other games can be adapted to it. Red Steel works perfectly, FPS' are going to be amazing.
Zelda... is Zelda  now with sword swinging action. I've always loved Zeldas, so my opinion is probably biased... but I love it so far (the wolf rules, looks so damn cool)
Wii Play is pretty crap... then again, it comes free with your second remote (and you will be getting a second one... multiplayer is great)

I'd like to buy one, but I find €250 friggin' expensive! (For comparison: this same machine is around €165 in Japan and around €195 in the US. And usually the games being published in Europe are a selection of the games being published in the US, which are in turn a selection of the games published in Japan.)

Well the Wii is the fastest selling console in Europe ever, not a bad achievement. They really need to make more consoles available for launch though.

My flatmate got a Wii for Christmas, when I go home on Thursday I will have my first Wii experience. I think he got Guitar Hero 3 and Mario Galaxy as well as Wii Sports.

Let me know what you think of Mario Galaxy, Coe. Seems like a good one to get. Guitar Hero wouldn't really interest me much. It's bad enough listening to my sisters use that Singstar...*winces*

I've got a Wii, but I'm not likely to get online with it any time soon, only got 1 internet connection in my room, so can't have my pc and my Wii both connected at the same time.

And yes, Super Mario Galaxy is a great game.

I've been playing it lately. I'm not enjoying it as much as you guys, though. :/ Guess I have a low appreciation for these kind of games now.

Hahah. That is ridiculously brilliant. Damned expensive, though that is to be expected, I guess. I wonder if you could rent it's service...

I'm interested in the types of gaming experiences you can have with it.

Giving this topic a little pick up.

It's coming up to two years now since the Wii's release. It's done very well, but I've not really heard of any stand out games for it. Y'know, for the serious gamer type. I've tried ones like Wii Sports and Mario Galaxy and they just didn't hold my interest. The games are heavily priced, too, taking into consideration the nature of the games they're putting out there.

So, help me out guys. What's the cure?

I've been considering getting the Force Unleashed for the console, but the 360's pure power is making me more inclined to buying it for that platform.

The Wii game I still play the most if Wii Sports, Its just so easy to pick up and play for 5 minutes or when you want to take our a bit of aggression (boxing and Baseball ). Plus I almost have all sports at pro status and gold medals on the training.

haha, I got mine about 2 moths ago (for free thanks to Mum's work raffle) meaning I've had nearly every nintendo system. Yay for me!!!

I'm the same as Coe, still love my Wii Sports. Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games is good for time-killing as well.

Think it's safe to say, I heavily dislike this 'console'. Yahtzee covers it so well, like with this review (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/844-Wii-Sports-Resort) of Wii Sports v.2 Warms my heart. :P

I feel sordid just having the console in my living-place-of-crappiness.

We enjoyed the Wii for a long time and it really did get us all playing together but I was disappointed because a lot of the games I was interested in where not available or games like call of duty where cut down versions of the same games on the more powerful consoles. Also some of the limitations like that Nintendo did not enable it to play DVD's made me frustrated when my DVD player broke down.

On the name it's a little confusing when we refer to the Wee board in front of our 2 year old boy, I predict potty training disasters may come our way if we are not careful.
